The Kanata North Office continues to hear about traffic concerns around Campeau Drive and Terry Fox Drive. We are in continuous contact with staff, and they recently provided the following information in a response to a resident that reached out to our office.

Installation of a left-turn arrow at Campeau Drive & Terry Fox Drive intersection was reviewed to closely observe vehicle volumes and congestion. Please visit this link for more details on what is looked at in that process:

A left-turn arrow study was conducted in April 2025 and was deemed to not reach the warrant threshold. Collision statistics were reviewed, and it was determined there is no demonstrated safety risk for vehicles on Campeau Drive. A left-turn arrow will not be installed at this time.

During special event days such as resurfacing, concerts and hockey games, all area streets are fully saturated with vehicles and progression is particularly slow.

The after-school period has also revealed a surge of westbound Campeau Drive vehicles approaching Terry Fox Drive. prior to the PM peak period. As a result of these public observations and inquiries, the signal timing has been modified to allow more vehicles to flow off of Campeau Drive and onto Terry Fox Drive. Field observations reveals these measures have had a decongesting effect on the intersection.

To throw the vehicle flow into disarray, Kanata Centrum parking lot has been undergoing resurfacing for a few weeks now. This resurfacing operation has closed the exit onto Terry Fox Drive, diverting thousands of vehicles to exit onto Herlihey Way & Campeau Drive. The result is extra delay and queueing on Campeau Drive. The area is being monitored on a daily basis to reduce congestion where possible.

The eastbound left-turn lane at Campeau Drive & Kanata Avenue intersection, has a vehicle sensor set-back two car lengths from the stopbar. This left-turn arrow is vehicle actuated by the third vehicle waiting in the queue on a red light. Due to variations in vehicle volumes making this turning movement, the arrow will not appear during every cycle of the lights. A scan of the City’s traffic system reveals the eastbound left-turn arrow has been actuated multiple times per day over the last month.

If you have any follow up questions for the Kanata North Office, please let us now. This is something that we will continue to be monitoring.
