A reminder that City staff are continuously updating the Kanata Lakes Golf Course Proposed Redevelopment webpage on the City’s website.
As per the motion Council passed, staff are to update Council regularly. One of these updates was on this week’s Planning and Housing Committee agenda. I had the opportunity to ask City staff questions at the meeting. You can watch a video of this exchange at Planning and Housing Committee – April 15, 2026 (33:35).
In it, you will hear Director of Planning Services, Derrick Moodie, say “If we were to observe a significant spill or health concern identified on the site we would be notifying the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to enforce under their legislation or to Public Health depending on the nature of the issue.” Councillor Gower followed up asking “How quickly could that happen?” Derrick responded saying “The spills action line is available 24 hours a day and it would happen, if it was a significant health concern, it would happen immediately.”
To note, residents can report spills, urgent environmental matters, or other events requiring immediate attention to the Ministry of the Environment’s Spills Action Centre (SAC). This service is available 24/7 through a province-wide toll-free number (1-800-268-6060).
I am not on the Ottawa Board of Health, but Councillor Gower is contemplating moving a motion on my behalf at the Ottawa Board of Health meeting on April 20th regarding the work taking place on the golf course lands. I would like to get clarity from Ottawa Public Health on a number of issues regarding the site contamination and who is responsible for ensuring residents’ safety and, I have received news today that residents have found another dead coyote on the golf course lands. A draft copy of the motion is here. I will update you in the next newsletter on that.
