Sharing the latest Storm Response Update from Councillor Curry.

Hello Kanata North,

I wanted to provide you with the latest updates on the City’s response to the July 1 storm and share some important information for residents. If your question is not answered below, or if you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me or the Kanata North Office at cathy.curry@ottawa.ca.

Residents affected by the heavy rainfall on July 1 can place storm-related waste at the curb without following the standard three-item garbage limit. Depending on available resources, this material will either be collected during your regular weekly garbage pickup or by dedicated storm cleanup crews.  If storm-related waste is not collected on your regular pickup day, please leave it at the curb. Residents are asked not to submit additional service requests if waste is left behind, as crews will return to collect it.

Our office has heard from residents that some neighbourhoods saw extra storm-related waste collected during regular garbage pickup yesterday, while others did not. This does not mean your material has been missed. There is a combination of regular collection trucks and dedicated storm cleanup crews working throughout the impacted areas of Kanata North, and collection will continue until all eligible storm-related waste has been picked up.

The City of Ottawa is keeping residents updated through their Storm-related waste – Heavy rainfall | City of Ottawa webpage. The Kanata North Office will also continue to send out information and post on the Kanata North Website.

Waste Removal

  • The three-item garbage limit has been waived for eligible storm-related waste.
  • Unlimited green bin collection is available, with additional organic waste accepted in clearly labelled bags. Residents may place up to two containers of construction and demolition material at the curb. Larger quantities should be managed through their insurance provider or contractor whenever possible.
  • Eligible construction and demolition materials may also be disposed of free of charge at the Trail Waste Facility by presenting a Service Request number, photo identification, and proof of address. The facility will also be open on additional Saturdays. Residents should visit Ottawa.ca for current dates, hours, and eligibility requirements.

While the City is supporting residents through enhanced waste collection and other recovery services, cleanup inside private homes remains the responsibility of homeowners, insurers, or qualified restoration contractors. Many residents have been able to complete cleanup efforts with the support of family, neighbours, insurance providers, or contractors. In some circumstances, however, additional assistance may be required.

Public messaging continues to emphasize removing water-damaged materials, drying affected areas as quickly as possible, and following Ottawa Public Health guidance, which can be found on ottawapublichealth.ca

Residents who have been displaced or who require temporary emergency accommodation as a result of flooding are encouraged to contact 3-1-1 for an assessment and support.

Please Report Flooding

A reminder that if residents experienced basement flooding, it is important that they report it through the City’s official reporting system. Residents are encouraged to submit a report through the City’s online reporting form.

Basement flooding information and resources:

While these resources do not address the immediate impacts of the storm, residents may also wish to review information on the following programs:

Community Information Sessions and Resource Centres

The City has been providing regular updates through Ottawa.ca and media briefings and will now expand its outreach through targeted community information sessions. These sessions are intended to ensure residents are aware of the supports and financial assistance available to them, understand best practices for safe flood cleanup, and have an opportunity to ask questions about the recovery process. In addition, the City is coordinating community resource centres where residents can drop in to receive information and guidance to assist with the safe cleanup of their homes. Additional details, including dates and locations, will be shared as soon as they are available.

Again, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at cathy.curry@ottawa.ca if you have questions or concerns.

Stay safe,
Councillor Cathy Curry
