Update from Councillor Cathy Curry

Garbage Pick Up – I have had many emails from residents asking why all of their flood-damaged materials/garbage weren’t picked up all at once. The answer is simply that the City has to pick up the regular garbage as well, so they are trying to pick it up, plus a little more and, at the same time, assess how many more trucks need to be sent back to the areas that have a lot of flood-damaged material out at the curb. Crews picked up 3-5 bags at many houses and then set up a second pick up time. We will all have to be patient while the City uses as many of its resources as it can to deal with all of the damage from the flood. If you have not had all of your garbage picked up one week after your first pick up, please let 311 know.

Requests for Investigations – I have had many emails asking whether the City will be investigating to find out why the flooding was so bad in some areas/some homes but not in others. City staff tell us that they want anyone who had any flooding to let 311 know so that they can track the flooding to help them determine what happened and why. If you have had any flooding at all, please report it at Report basement flooding – City of Ottawa.

Below is a very preliminary heat map of the flooding in Kanata North.

Requests for Financial Help – I have had a number of residents ask if there is any help for residents with covering the costs of their losses due to the flooding. Given the Province’s recognition of this disaster and an existing fund the City has historically had for flood-related hardship, there is some help. Please go to this Compassionate Grants Program link for more information. Know that I will continue to keep you updated if other grants or support becomes available.
