Hello Kanata North,

In continuing to share information with residents in response to the July 1st flooding, I have provided some updated details in this send out.

Canadian Red Cross supports

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Council approved a partnership with the Canadian Red Cross to provide urgent support to residents affected by the extreme weather event. Working with City staff, the Canadian Red Cross will help connect residents with services and resources, including support navigating insurance claims, access to engineers and renovation specialists, and other social supports.

The Canadian Red Cross is providing personalized recovery assistance to individuals and families, helping them assess their needs, understand available resources, plan their return home, and make informed decisions. People impacted by the floods can access support by emailing Red Cross at NavigationSupportON@redcross.ca or leaving a voicemail at 1-800-863-6582. The Red Cross will reply to all inquiries directly in the next 48-72 hours. More information is available at redcross.ca, where you will find the 2026 Ottawa Floods webpage.

City supports

Council also approved additional support for residents dealing with flooding and property damage. The City will waive building permit fees for flood-related repairs, waive encroachment fees for waste containers used to collect storm debris, and expand the Compassionate Grant Program and the Residential Protective Plumbing Program so more residents can access financial assistance. The Province has also announced plans to activate the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program for eligible flood-affected areas to help cover clean-up, repair and basic emergency expenses not covered by insurance.

The City is reviewing what happened and will share findings with Council and residents. Resources and information for residents continue to be available on the extreme weather event webpage.

Storm-related debris collection update – Contact 3-1-1

We know that residents are moving through the clean-up process at different speeds. While some are ready to dispose of flood-damaged materials, others are still working through insurance assessments, documenting damage, or making decisions about repairs.

Beginning Monday, July 20, residents will be encouraged to submit a service request to 3-1-1 when they are ready for pickup. This helps them know when assistance is needed and allows crews to respond when it makes the most sense for each household. You can submit a service request for garbage collection online or call 3-1-1. Dedicated collection vehicles will remain assigned to the impacted wards, and once a service request is submitted, crews will work to collect materials in a timely fashion.

Trail Waste Facility Landfill reimbursements

Information on reimbursement for eligible residents who have already paid storm-related waste disposal fees at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill is now available on Ottawa.ca. The information outlines how to submit a reimbursement request, required supporting documentation, and anticipated processing timelines.

Volunteer opportunities now available

Samaritan’s Purse Canada is seeking volunteers to support extreme weather event response efforts in Ottawa. Residents interested in volunteering can learn more and register through the organization’s volunteer sign-up page. Samaritan’s Purse is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that is independently coordinating and managing volunteer support for affected residents. Individuals who register will volunteer directly with Samaritan’s Purse, not the City of Ottawa.

Wellness visits

While homeowners remain responsible for removing damaged materials from their properties and should work with their insurance providers and qualified contractors where appropriate, wellness visits are intended to identify vulnerable residents who may have no available supports. Vulnerable residents identified through these visits are receiving direct follow-up from staff to provide additional information, connect them with available supports, and assist with identified needs. Please let us know if you know of someone who may need this support.

Please continue to reach out to the Kanata North office if you have questions or concerns at cathy.curry@ottawa.ca or 613-580-2474.
