On February 1, I was able to attend the City of Ottawa’s 2026 Black History Month launch. For the 2026 Black History Month celebrations, Black History Ottawa chose the theme “Celebrating our legacies” to underscore the value of the many past, present and future contributions of Black Canadians to Canada and the world.
Black History Month in Ottawa honours the ingenuity of early Black ancestors, recognizes the resilience and leadership of trailblazing Black leaders—past and present—and highlights the diverse allies who have supported Black communities throughout history. Through partnerships between community organizations, residents, and the City of Ottawa, Black History Month also showcases the rich cultural diversity, creativity, and talent within Ottawa’s Black community, while encouraging greater understanding, recognition, and appreciation of these legacies for future generations.
