Update from Councillor Cathy Curry

I continue to receive emails regarding snow removal issues and requests. We are always happy to help. I would encourage you, though, if you can, to contact 311, as the snow removal staff like to keep track of all snow-related issues so that they can review everything throughout the season and at the end. The 311 records help them do that most efficiently.

I have received a number of questions regarding the Kanata Lakes Golf Course. I attended and spoke at a public event organized by the Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition this past week. See more on this below. Please take the time to watch the recording of it. If you have further questions after that, please let me know.

I have had a number of emails from residents asking that we address a number of our ward infrastructure challenges. I always appreciate you sharing your experiences and concerns. One of the challenges I have is that while there are many projects planned for Kanata North (and a number of new ones given the budget we just passed), many of these projects take time. I know that it is difficult to wait, but there are many steps involved in most projects that require multiple departments to review and comment on the proposed plans. The good news is that there are many projects in the planning stages. Further down in this newsletter, I will list a number of exciting projects. I just wanted to share here what I often say in emails to residents: We have advocated for changes and were successful! Now, we just have to wait for the project planners to do their work, get all the designs finalized, plan the construction, watch the construction take place, and then celebrate!

As we get further into the Winter Season, there are a few reminders I want to send out from our Public Works team:

  • Flashing blue lights means City staff are hard at work. If you see a sidewalk plow approaching, please step aside into an open driveway. Always remember to stay at least 3 car lengths behind our vehicles – please never pass City vehicles.

  • There is no need to create a service request for routine snow clearing. Staff are on the job and our efforts are currently needed out in the community; service requests should only be created for emergencies.

  • Please place garbage, recycling, and organic collection bins in your driveway and not on the road or sidewalks. Residents can sign up to receive reminders and service alerts for their waste collection day by email or phone call at ottawa.ca/CollectionCalendar or can download the Ottawa Collection Calendar mobile app for Apple and Android devices to confirm their collection day.

Ottawa Fire is reminding residents to please stay off all ice. As temperatures drop, it’s important to stay alert around frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers. Ice conditions can change quickly, and what looks safe from a distance may not be stable up close.
