Update from Councillor Cathy Curry
Sandbag Filling – A huge shout out to all Kanata North students who helped to fill sandbags to protect against flooding along the Ottawa River. I remember when my own children helped to fill sandbags in the parking lot at West Carleton Secondary School. It was actually record setting how many bags were filled as the grades competed against each other! The people who live along the river are so appreciative. And, they let me know! If your student helped fill sandbags, thank them from me, too! Makes me proud to be the City Councillor for Kanata North and makes me miss teaching all at the same time.
Potholes – We have gotten a number of calls regarding potholes and poor road conditions. Please keep sending these into 311 or to us. The more reports staff receive, the more data they have to determine priorities.
Sidewalk cracks and conditions – We continue to get emails about poor sidewalk conditions. Each winter is different. This past winter was very hard on roads and sidewalks. And, the plows created other damage. Please keep reporting what you see because the condition indexes need to be updated. Your reporting requires staff to go out and look at the reality (literally) on the ground. Here is a quick link to 311 to report.
Construction project issues – With so many construction projects happening all over Kanata North, existing residents have to put up with a lot! Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions. With each development, we have a contact person to whom we can send any questions of concerns. Please let us know what you are seeing that might need to be reported to the site manager/contact person.
Street Sweeping – I have had a number of residents reach out about the fine gravel that is still on their streets from winter operations. Roads staff tell us that they are almost done all of the streets in Kanata North now. If your street is still not swept, please let us know.
Rail crossing at March and Carling – I have had a number of residents write in to let me know that the pavement at the rail crossing on March Road is not good (again). I know this situation well as I drive over those tracks pretty much every day myself. However, I appreciated the reminder that staff need to go out and repair it again. Staff responded to our request that the repair is beyond the scope of what the City does. They have reached out to the rail operators to have them repair it properly.
Dangerous Driving – I had a resident reach out to me with video footage of dangerous driving taking place on March Road. Given the video and a clear view of the license plate, police were able to determine the driver. Police were then able to go speak to the young person who was driving dangerously. I am hopeful that this young driver will now drive more carefully and respectfully as that will help keep all of us safer on the roads. Your photos and videos can be very helpful!
